Peter Gourri - Life Coach
Life coaching as we know it started in the 1980s as a way to help people. Life coaches make it clear that the service they provide is not therapy, but they help you organize and focus to become the best person you can be.
This is Peter Gourri - British transplant, Jersey City enthusiast, and a great coach. I worked with Peter, deep diving into overcoming fears, working through issues, and learning techniques to help myself. Peter has also become a friend and I love being able to share his story and his passion.
Let’s start at the beginning. Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a British expat living in the Tri-state area, who works with clients all over the world including New York, Jersey City, Los Angeles, London, and Singapore.
I grew up in London, United Kingdom. My parents were both immigrants who arrived in the UK with next to nothing and ran the family car repair shop. My mother taught me how to repair and service cars whilst my father taught me how to do bodywork. From a young age, they taught me to have a strong work ethic.
After school, I became a junior law clerk and then a lawyer, spending the large majority of my career with law firms in the City of London and was a Senior Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Training Branch. After a very successful career in private practice advising both large as well as small businesses and individuals, I moved to the United States in 2016 to become the Chief Admin Officer of a multinational consultancy based in New York City, NY. After two years, I decided that it was time that I made significant changes in my life and do something that would make a positive difference to others as well as challenge me personally.
Where does Coaching come in?
I started talking with a life coach about the work involved to become a fully trained and accredited coach. While we were talking, the coach pointed out that I had so much going on in my life. He felt before I could help others, I needed to help myself. He invited me to work with him as my life coach. At the time I was really unfulfilled and kept asking myself, “What is my purpose? Why am I here?” I worked hard every hour I could and put my marriage, family and friends second place behind my clients and work. My relationships and health severely suffered through stress and hard living.
During the time working with my coach, my life changed more than I could possibly imagine. I still feel like a new person, more relaxed and fulfilled than ever! My relationships with my family and friends, as well as my health and wellness, have all improved beyond recognition.
I use my 25+ years of professional, business, and life experiences to help others as a life coach. I believe in life coaching because it worked for me.
Let’s talk about your philosophy “Service above others.” Can you share what is means and why it is part of your ethos?
From a young age, my parents taught me to have a strong work ethic as well as believing in “service above self” and never to expect anything from anyone else in return. I even had to work to earn my allowance! Those early influences made me work hard in whatever tasks I chose to take on in my life. Helping people has been a constant in my life and being a dedicated coach enables me to continue with this approach to life.
Can you share your anecdote about therapists vs life coaches vs etc
A very simplistic distinction between Therapy, Consulting and Coaching is:
A therapist asks you about your past and how you feel about it.
A consultant gives you three different business models and charges you lot of fees for it.
A coach focuses on your future possibilities, not the mistakes you have made in the past!
What sets your practice apart?
Over 30 years of business and life experience in the legal profession, business, and volunteering with non-profit organisations.
Why is it important for people to have a coach of some sort?
We all lose our way along the path that is life. Life Coaching helps you not just to get back on track but also clarity as to the best way forward!
What are some things you’ve learned along the way of being a life coach?
We all need help to have clarity at points in our life. For some it comes easier than others, which is why it is a pleasure for a coach to help with that journey. The “light bulb” moment when a client realizes their own potential and journey, is always a joy for a coach to witness!
What are 5 tips for living a healthier life?
1. Take care of yourself. Then you can take care of others!
2. Live the life you want and deserve, not the life you think you should live.
3. Life is all about second, third, fourth , fifth etc. chances. Never believe you have to stay where you are.
4. It does not matter how old you are or how long you have been in a particular situation, we all evolve as people and it is ok to change!
5. This isn’t a rehearsal, be happy and enjoy life!
