Jersey City Heights - New Parking Rules

Updated: 8/20

Well the day has finally come that the new parking zone rules are coming into effect.

Starting in now in October, all of Jersey City Heights will be one parking zone with new and different rules (until then Zone 2 is still in effect). Why you ask? Residents called for action from the city and created a group and coalition to work on the changes. Parking in the Heights has been working on this for over a year, finally getting changes implemented to protect our very precious parking. “The goal of the zone is to improve the parking conditions for all Heights residents. At a cost of 4 cents a day, it seems like a deal.”

“With Union City and Hoboken both having zones, their resident have been using the Heights as a free-parking lot. And, cars from as far as Pennsylvania have been using our streets as a park-and-ride. These and numerous other parking issues are being addressed with the implementation of the new zone. Without a zone, none of these can be addressed.” To note: the cars from other states are probably residents who have not changed their addresses to Jersey city and thus car and license. “Now they will be forced to handle things fair and legally.”

New Rules:

Zone Parking is 24 hours a day, 6 days a week (excluding Sundays)

Permits will be required from midnight Sunday through 11:59 pm Saturday night.

4 hour parking per 24 hours will be enforced and permit is not needed.

Residents in that zone must continue to abide by the existing rules and regulations.

Zone 16

How do you get a permit?

  1. Online (so easy)

  2. Go to Parking Enforcement Division Office, located at 394 Central Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07307. Hours are Monday- Friday 8am-5pm.

For guest passes you can go to the Parking Enforcement Division Office during their hours OR you can go to the North Police Station on Central Ave 24/7 to pick them up (this is amazing!). You can now get 10 guest passes a month.

What do we hope for -

-We hope that this will help with parking on the Western Slope, where they did not have zone rules. We also hope this will help in the rest of the Heights, where parking is hard to find.

-We hope the guest pass process gets update - potentially a long term pass system

If you would like to be part of the conversation and continue to help in serving the people parking, definitely go to a Parking in the Heights meeting. The next meeting is September 17 7:30 -8:30 at the Jersey City Elks Lodge 211 Elk Club on 83 Hutton Street.
