Having an Open Mic Night was a great idea.
Together with Crystal Letters we had 21 performers, over 30 people in attendance, and will be donating $220 to Women Rising. Women Rising's mission "is to assist women and their families to achieve self-sufficiency and live safe, productive and fulfilling lives, through social services, economic development, and advocacy services."
I haven’t been to an open mic night in years, but I thought 1) What is missing from The Heights, 2) Where can we do it so close to (my) home, 3) Who can I team up with to make it all happen, and 4) Can we make this a benefit to a local charity? Well, an open mic night at a coffee house is missing, Froth on Franklin wants to do events and has the space, Crystal Letters is the queen of open mics in Jersey City, and we love working with Women Rising and giving back to them.
We had singers, songwriters, and a musical trio play; we had poets, writers, linguists, inspirational speakers, and a comedian. The color of the expression and the expanse of people’s knowledge was inspiring. The flow of words and thoughts, ideas and celebrations, the anxiety and love, kept the room on its toes; silent waiting for the next phrase for us to gobble down.
During the event I realized that it didn’t even feel like I planned it. I was there participating as a guest and as someone performing. I performed two poems for the first time since I was 16. And I have already written a thought piece for our next event (tbd, but we are working on it).
Froth is the best place (see our article on them) and the owner Al actually plays the drums and performed. The food was delicious and I have cake waiting for me in the fridge. Crystal invited her open mic people and friends and they came out in force. And we finally met our contact at Women Rising and are so excited to continue our partnership with them.

Hope to see you next time!
