Hudson Wedding Social - Thinking Outside the Box

Hudson Wedding Social is a little different from your average wedding fair. It is a smaller affair with only 2-3 vendors per category, each with their own identity. This allows the vendors to really get to know the prospective customers and not just get them on their mailing list. It is aims to reach the "more open-minded creative couple who might want to plan their wedding outside the box a bit." While, we are not in the market for anything wedding related, we thought this was a great event to check out and get a one-on-one experience with local vendors.

The event was originally produced by by Karma Flowers, Hudson Cakery, and Trunk Rentals, however this year they had to bow out and Greater Good Events stepped in. The companies are all located locally in Jersey City and Weehawken. They originally got the idea to create their own wedding event, when they were not feeling the wedding events that were being produced. "A few years back, we noticed there weren't a lot of NJ wedding events that would attract a local and more urban/creative couple. The fairs were all big box expo's with dated vendors. The three of us were all considered to be "modern" event pros and didn't love working these older events. So why not create an event where other local pros join together for an intimate and creative event." And since they were all friends for years working together in the same industry, "The event was a natural progression of working in the same industry, but not competing with one another."

Who are the businesses that produced the event? Karma Flowers is a Jersey City florist for special events and they have fun floral arranging classes. Hudson Cakery is a custom cake shop in Weehawken right over the bridge on Willow Ave (but started in Jersey City in 2009!). Great Good Events is an event planner located in Jersey City is committed to crafting beautiful events for our clients with an emphasis on sustainability. By the way these are all women owned businesses!

So, on February 16th I walked into Battello (such a hardship going to such a nice restaurant) and I made my way around the room to meet a lot of new vendors and businesses. Battello is an amazing space, "It seemed like an obvious choice since it's a beautiful and large space to host an event, especially a wedding! It has everything a local couple would need to host a gorgeous event: it's in Jersey City, has amazing views of the water and NYC, has a sophisticated and airy space, and their food is fantastic!

I first I sat with Karma flowers and we got to make our own floral bracelets. Also at the booth were the owners of Hudson and Sound. They were sisters who were both getting married and needed to start looking for themselves instead of being in the actual wedding fairs being a homeware and personalized stationary shop. They said that this event really fit with what they were looking for.

My favorite vendor was Beethoven's Veranda located in North Bergen and Hoboken. When we spoke to him about his style he said, "Who doesn't love a little drama!" What was so special about his work was he used a lot of natural products to create the centerpieces and decorations like natural driftwood that you rent with succulents to take home as party favors, mini trees, or wooden flower boxes made from reclaimed wood. They work with every price range and rent almost any of the decorations. What sets this floral shop apart according to the owner William is 1) A+ products 2) Unusual Varieties 3) Service.

Finally, a new favorite in Hoboken in Happy Box Store (they are donating a raffle for our GJC PAMPERING DAY), whose mission is to provide people with an easy way to gift fun, unique care packages for all kinds of occasions with a couple of clicks. They do premade boxes or you can work with them to create customized boxes (ie bridesmaids, birthdays, and more). It is another women owned business, owned by two sisters who turned a gift giving blog into a real life gift giving business.

Honorable Mentions: Hudson Paperie - their invitations are amazing and sometimes hand done Kate Neal Photo - gorgeous photos and one of the photographers suggested by Battello The Hudson Cakery - Her work is beautiful and best cake pops ever. Greater-Good Events - I have worked with Ellen before and love what her company does with non-profits and her wholistic view of planning an event.

I love the small feeling of the event and the beautiful space they created within the beautiful space of Battello. I got to spend time with each vendor and understand who they are and what they are trying to achieve with their business. And as someone who is a little unconventional with events and ideas this wedding social was perfectly inline with what I think a wedding event should be!
