When You Find the Right Watch to Go With Jersey City

When I think of Jersey City, one of my favorite things about it is the re-purposed industrial against the new modern.  Something about Jersey City, with so much history and industry, gets the design lover inside of me going.  This goes for anything with that kind of feel - pretty with the nitty gritty.  I like to think of myself as someone who appreciates the modern industrial design (having an entertainment center built out of barn doors and iron piping and a built in book shelf out of wood and old soapstone.)

Near Liberty State Park is a quiet intersection of Communipaw and Suydam Ave.  It has huge brownstones next to old factories and brand new condos; this to me is the epitome of modern industrial. In the area is The Foundry, a gorgeous building that has been converted to apartments, located across from the Liberty State Park Light Rail.

The Foundry used to be the American Type Founders, 23 businesses that joined together who worked with type fonts for manual typesetting in the turn of the century.  According to Chris, the realtor for The Foundry, it was open from 1904 to the 1940s.  After that it was used a warehouse space, until the developer took the building and made it into apartments and condos around 2005.  Chris loves The Foundry because "the developer kept the shell of the building and stayed true to the nature of the building."  Inside the Foundry you can find gorgeous “catwalks” that connect the levels with courtyards and interesting lofted apartments.

When Jord Watches by Woodwork Watches first contacted me I knew I had to connect these  streamlined and elegant watches with The Foundry.  The watchesperfectly exemplify my love of industrial in a modern setting.  We were lucky to be welcomed in by one of the tenants who is also opening a restaurant on the same street (read below for more) and took gorgeous shots of the watch along the gangplanks with NYC in the background.

Pictured is the Frankie watch in Koa and Ash, a large face unisex watch. The watch is extremely light weight but the grey face against the medium wood, makes a commanding statement like a re-purposed lofted manufacturing building.  Also who does love grey and cream and wood? The watch is extremely versatile and can be dressed up (for Valentine’s Day coming up), worn over a cozy sweater, or every day with a pair of jeans.

So who is Jord Watches? Jord (pronounced yo-d) is a small and new company (3 years old). They follow strict sustainability guidelines with the majority of their wood coming from furniture remnants.  The Koa wood, used for my watch, comes from damaged trees brought down from natural weather events.  Also, all the wood is treated with natural substances, not only for the sake of the environment, but for those who work on the watches.

This is the first in a series of posts about this little section of Bergen Lafayette, Jersey City where everyone knows everyone, like Jersey City Heights but everyone really knows everyone, and there is so much love and inspiration in the air.
