This Hoboken-Based Castile Soap Line Will Change the Way You See ‘Clean.’ Meet Hoboken Soapworks
If you ask anyone that knows me, I am the queen of clean. While others resort to yoga, meditation, or reading a book to relax after a stressful week, I turn to… well… cleaning. Call me crazy but there’s no better feeling than coming home to a nice tidy apartment that smells like Meadows & Rain (thanks, Mr. Clean!).
One Sunday, as I strolled through a very windy downtown at the 6th Borough Market, I met Jeff & Sara. Jeff and Sara, along with their friend Sean Behrens, are the husband & wife duo and co-founders of Hoboken Soapworks, a local company that specializes in creating all-natural handmade liquid castile soaps.
If you’re a cleaning enthusiast like myself, let me introduce you to your newest obsession. Castile soap is derived from plant oils - usually olive or coconut oil - and is 100% natural and sustainable (no harsh chemicals or animal fat). The best part? Not only does castile soap tackle nearly every cleaning task at home from laundry and washing dishes to mopping the floor, you can also use it as a body wash, toothpaste, shampoo and more!
Hoboken Soapworks’ products come in three delicious scents: Pepperlyptus, a blend of peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil; Honeysuckle, my personal favorite which has a spring-like a flowery scent; and Citrusmint, a refreshing blend of grapefruit and lime essential oils with a hint of spearmint. You can buy a smaller 16-oz bottle, or opt for the larger size of 32 oz.
As a newbie to the castile soap frenzy, I decided to chat with Jeff and Sara about the brand, their products and what’s next for the Hoboken-based duo:
Can you tell me more about Hoboken Soapworks?
Hoboken Soapworks was created to simplify everyone’s busy life. Most people have a different kind of detergent for each task, whether it’s laundry, body, and other household tasks. With our soap, you only need one bottle for about 15 different things because it’s gentle enough for skin, but the formula is also simple enough for everything. Just grab a bottle, dilute it with a bit of water, and you’re good to go!
What inspired you to get into the castile soap-making business?
Jeff is a chemist who was living in a small Hoboken apartment. We thought there was a better way to make space for ourselves and simplify things a bit and because he’s creative and understands the chemistry behind soap, he experimented until he found the perfect soap for us. We shared it with our friends and family and everyone loved it and the concept and how the soap made their skin feel.
What’s next for Hoboken Soapworks?
We just joined Etsy! We have also set up our website to accept product orders. We are really just getting off the ground, so we are listening to our customers for what they want to see and Jeff is always experimenting here and there to come up with something special.
What are some cool ways to use Hoboken Soapworks?
Use it in the shower as a body wash… For a moisturizing rinse, massage a small squirt of the soap onto a loofah and work to a lather.
Use it to clean your hands… Hoboken Soapworks lasts forever in a soap dispenser: just take an empty dispenser and add 1 part soap to 2 parts water (3 parts water for a foam dispenser).
Use it as an all-purpose cleaner… 1 oz in a spray bottle filled with water will keep countertops and any other surfaces spiffy clean.
