Eating Out in Hoboken – Not Just Another Sports Bar – Greek Town Restaurant
On Thursday night, my boyfriend was craving Greek
food. We were going to go to a restaurant in the middle of Hoboken, but I wanted to see if there were other options. So, I went on my trusty Yelp app and found Greek Town Restaurant. There were 6 reviews with 5 having 5 stars; 1 had 1 star but it must have been from the day they opened. They had been open for a week and I am glad we decided to go.
While the food took a little while and our salad came out last after our meal was on the table, the food was delicious, our server was really great, and we met the owner.
We started with spanakopita (spinach and feta in phyllo dough) and avgolemono (chicken and lemon) soup. The spanakopita was delicious and had an herb I couldn’t place. The soup was the best of its kind that I have had in a while. The owner told us he uses fresh lemon when he makes it and I didn’t need to add as much lemon as I usually do.
Next we both got a gyro plate – the BF got the gyro and I got the chicken kebab. The Tzatziki was delicious and was really yogurt, spices, and cucumber, the pita was melt in your mouth good, and the Greek fries were almost perfect (you can never have too much lemon). The salad was dressed in a light dressing, the Greek olives were perfectly tart, and the cucumbers crunchy.
The owners were sitting at another table against the glass windows and had a cappuccino that looked like artwork. It had milk on the bottom, coffee in the middle, and foam on top. So of course I had to order it, but got decaf so I wasn’t bouncing off the walls. Then the owner comes over with “Grandma’s old recipe” semolina sweet cake that reminded me of Passover honey cake mixed with sweet corn bread. It had honey soaked through and was perfect with our cappuccino.
The owner was extremely proud of his restaurant and you can tell by the food. Everything is hand made and the gyro is made fresh. Grandma would definitely be proud!
If you live in the North Jersey/NYC area, I hope you will venture to Garden and Newark in Hoboken to support this brand new restaurant.
